Every silence
Has a quality.
Anxious,
Cautious,
Conspiratorial,
Contentment.
Ominous,
Anticipatory,
Smoldering,
Stillness.
If every silence
Asks a question,
Then each also
Provides an answer,
Casting the long
Shadow of elusive
Truth, or lies,
You must embrace.

Anyone who's been around me long enough has heard me say that silence has a quality. Usually I mean that when I haven't heard from someone, though occasionally it's during a live conversation. But often, like a kind of useless superpower, I can interpret it correctly, better than a roll of the dice. Call it a survival skill in my world.
Sometimes, silence can be refreshing. Christmas Eve is exceptionally quiet. I’ve found I look forward to that night when there are no planes, no cars, no people out. Just natural silence like we don’t get very often any more. I sit on the porch to soak it in. It is still somewhat quiet the next morning though it fades quickly. Kind of like our candle vigil on the Solstice, it is something that makes this time of year special.
This is the second poem I worked on during Kitten*Con this year, mostly during the scheduled writing day while others were discussing gin and rolling the poetry dice.
This has got to be one of the easiest pictures I’ve done for a poem. It was taken on a foggy morning in 2009 in Walsingham Park. It was the winner from among all the foggy pictures I’ve collected over the years. I didn’t change a thing, just added a signature.
